The Miami Heat are taking a patient approach in their pursuit of veteran guard Klay Thompson.
According to a report from the Miami Herald, the Heat are waiting to see whether Thompson can negotiate a buyout with the Dallas Mavericks rather than attempting to acquire him via trade. The strategy would allow Miami to add one of the NBA’s most accomplished shooters without surrendering valuable players or draft assets.
The report also states that Miami intends to preserve the roughly $7 million remaining from its mid-level exception. By keeping that salary cap tool available, the Heat would have the financial flexibility to sign Thompson should he become an unrestricted free agent following a buyout.
Thompson joined the Mavericks after spending the first 13 seasons of his NBA career with the Golden State Warriors, where he helped the franchise capture four NBA championships. Widely regarded as one of the greatest shooters in league history, the five-time All-Star still offers elite perimeter shooting and valuable postseason experience despite entering the latter stages of his career.
For Miami, waiting on a potential buyout represents a low-risk strategy. Rather than sacrificing trade assets, the Heat could add a proven veteran capable of stretching the floor and providing championship pedigree if Dallas ultimately parts ways with Thompson.
As of now, no buyout has been finalized, and Thompson remains under contract with the Mavericks. Until his situation changes, Miami’s interest appears to be centered on maintaining financial flexibility while monitoring developments.
